Espria highlights the need for organised cloud migration in the education sector

Espria reports worries from education sector representatives about the looming digital switch-off, and the need to prepare cloud and communications systems.

With the recent announcement of the delay to the digital switch-off for ISDN and PSTN until early 2027 by BT Group, customers now have a wider window to migrate to digital services before their old networks become obsolete. Previously, BT had planned to shift customers by the end of 2025, but now, the new end-of-January 2027 deadline provides them with more time to transition consumers, and especially the more vulnerable.

However, whilst switching consumers to digital services is increasingly important, thousands of businesses across the UK are still to make the move. For the education sector, many are concerned their systems won’t be updated in time, and they don’t have the resources or the expertise to manage their migration and provisioning.

These worries come directly from conversations with Espria, the managed solutions and communications specialist, who urges schools and academies to get ahead on their migration and take steps with their communications IT now, rather than wait.

Espria recently attended the National Association of Head Teachers Annual Conference, a gathering of UK school leaders from all over the UK to network, share experiences and discuss the most pressing issues impacting school leaders and their institutions today, as help as to help shape NAHT policy and focus in the coming year.

Andy Fung, Solutions Architect at Espria and an attendee at the conference commented, “Increased concerns from school representatives on whether their systems will be ready for the shift is normal at this stage. But schools shouldn’t be worried; with the right support and advice, managing IT and comms system needs – and finding the right solution – within available budgets is still possible, even with the delayed deadline. It’s better to be safe than sorry; have these conversations with suppliers now, rather than delay starting the journey when you could end up in a logjam.

“Every organisation is now on a journey to the cloud, which will take varying amounts of time as cases differ. Starting now means that organisations can stay ahead of the curve and are prepared well ahead of the eventual switch-off of legacy services. Understanding that this digital switch-off is one of the inevitable challenges for schools over the next few years is key, as all schools, and businesses in general, will need time to implement the best solutions for them.”

Since the original telecoms ISDN/PSTN switch-off decision in November 2017, many businesses have made the transition to digital network technology, integrating offers such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), Digital Voice or All-IP telephony. However, there are still many who are uncertain of which options are best suited for their operations.

But Espria is ready to help. “At Espria, we are committed to delivering the most effective solutions for all our education partners, and we are fully equipped to provide support for their most pressing challenges,” Fung continues. “With expertise in Cloud, IT, Communications and Document Solutions, we have a track record of delivering reliable and cost-effective print, communications and IT solutions to support schools and academies. Our range of solutions includes system SIM cards, Wi-Fi access, legacy cabling integration and 5G routers, which have already been used to overcome connectivity issues in schools and academies of all sizes.”

“Keeping teachers and support staff in the loop, and safeguarding compliant, is part of our communications offering, which is why we also provide mobile (SIM card) services for caretakers, site managers, trip phones and more. Secure communications to protect data and team devices is a priority, so we can ensure a school’s safeguarding policy is supported no matter where team members are.”

Cybersecurity concerns are also massive for the education sector and thus worries that cloud migration may open more attack vectors are shared by many IT operators. But Fung advises that IT suppliers already provide a greater shielding for organisational data due to their strategic alliances with security experts.

“Experts in the security space are now more easily accessible via partnership alliances, unified by a single supplier. Many of these cyber security service products integrate as part of a wider security ecosystem, meaning telemetry is shared to enhance the efficacy and impact of security solutions. For education, as a data-heavy and cyberattack-focused sector, this bolstered security posture is not just welcomed, but needed across their systems.

“At Espria, we strive to offer schools a breadth of solutions to support the challenges they face. With the digital switch-off delayed, it’s time for schools to prepare their systems for the future of communications. We are ready to provide support and managed services to educators who are still behind on making the shift, guiding them through the process every step of the way.”
