Productivity – It’s all about liberating talent by Glenn Griggs, CEO of Ricoh UK

Glenn, explores what it means to unlock productivity in the modern workplace

In today’s fast-paced business landscape, the ability to work smarter and maximise productivity has become a critical differentiator.

But what does it truly mean to work smarter?

From my point of view, productivity is about working smarter, not harder. To make this a reality, business leaders must find mechanisms to meet three key criteria:

Empower a workforce, foster an environment where talent can thrive, and leverage the right tools to amplify their capabilities.

Increasingly, technology plays a pivotal role in this, acting as a force multiplier that can streamline operations, enhance communication, and unlock new levels of efficiency.

But it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Organisations must first understand their current level of digital maturity and identify areas where strategic investments can yield the greatest returns.

This process involves assessing existing workflows, identifying pain points and bottlenecks, and pinpointing opportunities for optimisation. It’s about aligning technology with the unique needs and challenges of your business and workforce.

Once these areas have been identified, it’s crucial to prioritise investments that not only enhance productivity but, all importantly, enrich the employee experience.

At Ricoh we take a proactive approach to this, gathering feedback and listening to employee ideas where possible and using this as ‘direction finding’ – after all, who knows business processes better than those working within them day-in-day-out.

This could mean implementing collaborative tools that facilitate seamless teamwork, automating repetitive tasks to free up valuable time, or deploying intuitive self-service portals that empower employees to find solutions independently.

However, technology alone is not the sole solution to productivity gains.

True transformation hinges on cultivating a culture of continuous learning and skill development.

As businesses embrace new tools and processes, they must invest in upskilling their workforce, ensuring that every individual has the knowledge and confidence to leverage these innovations effectively.

This requires a commitment to ongoing training programs, mentorship opportunities, and the creation of safe environments where employees can experiment, fail, and learn without fear of repercussions.

At the heart of this lies the employee experience.

When individuals feel valued, supported, and equipped with the resources they need, they naturally become more engaged, innovative, and, as a result, productive.

It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy – a positive employee experience breeds higher motivation and output, which in turn reinforces that positive experience.

However, creating an exceptional employee experience is no small feat. It requires an approach that considers every aspect of the work environment, from physical spaces to digital tools, processes, and cultural norms.

It’s about designing an ecosystem that nurtures growth, collaboration, and a sense of purpose.

At Ricoh, we’ve coined the term, ‘Let People Succeed’. This is a mindset as much as it is a mission statement. It means fostering a growth mindset that celebrates curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace change.

To that end, we’re committed to ongoing training such as our SCALA and Maiden programs. These are designed to upskill and cross-skill our service workforce to enable individuals to work with the complete Ricoh portfolio.

We have also undergone a transformation in format with delivered Learning and Development in recent years, so as well as traditional classroom style learning environments, we offer self-guided digital courses for our people build their technical, leadership, and people skills at their pace.

It is perhaps obvious to say but in this era of rapid technological advancement, those who fail to prioritise their workforce’s digital capabilities risk falling behind. Investing in employee skill development not only enhances productivity but also future-proofs your organisation, ensuring that your team is equipped to navigate the ever-evolving digital landscape.

As we celebrate World Productivity Day, we must remember that true productivity can only be reached when people are at the centre of the approach.

It’s about liberating the potential within our workforce, empowering them with the tools, resources, and support they need to thrive. By prioritising the employee experience and fostering a culture of continuous learning, we can unlock new levels of innovation, efficiency, and, ultimately, success.
