– Nearly one in three employees says they avoid big tasks in December
– Security specialist shares tips on how businesses can maximise efficiency in the run-up to Christmas.
The weeks leading up to Christmas can cause a significant drop in workplace output as staff begin winding down and many businesses face shutdown during the festive period. This creates pressure to clear workloads and meet targets before closing.
And the data shows this, with a study from 2024 suggesting that nearly one in three (31%) employees avoid doing big tasks completely in December.
That’s why Adam Bennett, workplace expert from Digital ID, has shared five practical solutions for your company to maintain momentum before the Christmas break.
“Old mobile computers not only slow workers down but also create frustration when they fail. Upgrading to newer models can drastically cut errors and downtime, allowing staff to process more transactions in less time.”
“There’s also equipment like old scanners, which frequently struggle with reading damaged or poorly printed codes, and cause delays and inaccuracies. Upgrading to modern scanners with advanced imaging technology can help keep pace with peak season speeds since they can read barcodes from any angle and in poor lighting conditions.”
“Similarly, slow label printers can also create queues of packed items waiting to be labelled and shipped. Choosing to invest in faster printing solutions removes these bottlenecks, especially valuable when order volumes increase in December.”
“Modern picking benches positioned strategically can also reduce unnecessary movement and speed up output. Simple changes like centralising commonly picked items or reorganising workstations can shave seconds off each transaction, which adds up to significant time savings across busier days.”
“You’ll often find many businesses also wait until they’re overwhelmed before bringing in temporary workers. By then, there’s little time for proper training, leading to mistakes and slower processing times. Getting seasonal workers up to speed before peak season hits means they’ll be contributing at full capacity when you need them most.”
“Any companies that fail to address these challenges often start January with backlogs and stressed employees. This creates issues as the post-holiday period should be about building momentum for the year ahead, not catching up on December’s unfinished business.”
